Tyler Ennis dekes Tim Thomas silly for the shootout-winning goal. Sabres win the SO 3-2 and the game 7-6 at sold-out HSBC Arena on Jan. 1, 2011. A fine way to start the new year.

Was back at HSBC Arena tonight. Got this video on my iPhone — USA’s Emerson Etem was booed by USA fans after scoring our 6th goal in a World Junior Championship game against Slovakia (skip ahead to 31 seconds). The Canadians next to us got a kick out of it. The day before, Etem called Buffalo a “ghost town” on Twitter (not a smart thing to say about a host city), was booed in intros and throughout the game. We ended up winning 6-1.
(Etem says he heard the booing, but “it’s all fun” and he “had a blast.”)

Tonight I saw the Sabres beat the Devils 5-4 in a shootout at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. Rookie goalie Jhonas Enroth won his second straight for Buffalo. Got video of the whole shootout from my seat (watch above)!
This was a very entertaining hockey game and the Sabres came back down a goal three times to eventually win it. It was Lindy Ruff’s 1,000th career game coaching the Sabres, and the arena made an announcement about that at the beginning of the game, which actually resulted in a huge cheer from the road crowd (I was surprised).
Needless to say, the home fans were not happy with the result and booed the Devils off the ice. They remain winless at home this year, and the only other team who can say that right now is Buffalo (hopefully we change that this weekend). There were number of obscenities being shouted as I left the arena, particularly in regard to $100 million dollar man Ilya Kovalchuk who lost the puck in his shootout try.
I also went to the Sabres-Devils match-up a few weeks ago in Newark, which Buffalo won 6-1.

Loved growing up in Buffalo and I’m a huge fan of this video on why Buffalo is such a special place (via The Buffalo News). In particular, have always been fascinated by the city’s rich history (one reason for my interest in genealogy)

This was my first ever time on a cruise ship and wow, I totally see why people rave about them. This was 18 decks tall and loaded with entertainment and things to do, and best part, free food and drinks.
A HUGE thanks to Twitter friend Sarah Evans (one of 9 to make this list) who invited me as a guest (ironically via Facebook - social media FTW)! Really enjoyed meeting Mashable Assistant Editor Lauren Indvik tonight too.
